Virtual Happiness

I’ve recently been hearing a lot about, and just today read an article about a new online phenomenon called “Second Life”. In short, it’s a virtual, online world in which you create your own “persona” and then intereact with others (called avatars). You can be what you want and do what you want. Millions of people are visiting this (unreal) world every day … why?

It seems many are searching for happiness!

But is it valid and/or helpful to search for happiness in an unreal world? If you find it is it really happiness? Now I’m no luddite; in fact quite the opposite. I’m quite excited about some of the possibilities and options computers and the internet now provide (in many areas of life). But I can’t help but wonder whether those who look for happiness in this way are possibly denying their reality. And if we don’t deal with reality then are we really dealing with, and living life?

Today’s tip - search for happiness in the real things in your real life…I’ve no doubt if you look hard enough you’ll find plenty!

Psychological studies show that we misinterpret things that are in an email 50% of the time …. so there is a likelihood of a great misunderstanding in this type of environment too. And although it’s only something in cyberspace it can still have a large impact on your thinking throughout the day ……. and possible misunderstandings are then made even greater.

Because of the novelty factor and the fact that you’re probably placing a lot of time and thought into the whole game (given it’s popularity etc) it can take up a great % of your life which affects who you are not only now but can also affect who you are in the future. But then again this is like everything in life.
